Chapter 24: Work

Frank pulled up to the address given to him by Ronald and shifted his car into park. He sat for a moment, looking at the large building and wondered why anyone would want to live in an old factory. His own tastes leaned toward grand Victorian structures or colonial homes. Modern structures were, for lack of a better word, offensive to his sensibilities.

Frank turned off the engine, stepped out of the car, and adjusted his coat. The pockets were heavy with pre-packed Ziploc bags of salt, and he had the iron rings given to him when he left the Benedictine Brotherhood.

Other than those, Frank was only armed with his wits.

He hoped they would prove up to the task ahead of him.

Stepping out of the car, he closed the door gently behind him and heard the sound of another car pulling up behind him. Turning, he saw a Prius park, and a man climbed out a moment later.

“Frank?” the driver asked.

“Yes. Are you Ronald?”

The driver offered a smile of relief as he extended his hand. “I am. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

“Same,” Frank replied and shook the man’s hand. “You remind me of one of my former professors.”

“Ah.” Ronald chuckled. “Yes, I get that quite a bit. I am afraid that I tend to dress in a rather conservative fashion. I am all of those clichés, you know? Tweed coat, the occasional snifter of brandy. Fine English teas and most assuredly, an individual who enjoys classical music.”

“Nothing wrong with any of that.” Frank smiled. “So, this is the place.”

“It is indeed,” Ronald confirmed. As one, they turned to face the building. “The ghost, if she is still there and not a figment of my and my colleague’s imagination, is on the second floor. Usually. Are you quite certain this is something you’re comfortable with?”

Frank nodded. “Oh, yes, don’t worry about that. I’m not certain how long it will take. I could be in there for a few minutes, or she might make me wait hours.”

“Well, you have my cell phone number,” Ronald said. “I am more than happy to give you space and room to work if you would like to call me when you’re finished… if you can finish.”

“That sounds like a good plan.” Frank looked at the building. “There’s a lot of places to hide in there. I’ll give you a call in a couple of hours, regardless. Just to give you an update.”

“I would appreciate it greatly,” Ronald replied.

“Sure.”

Ronald glanced over at Frank’s car. “Do you need to get anything out before you go in?”

Frank smiled. “No, this isn’t my first rodeo, Ronald. I’ve got everything I need with me.”

“Well, I will leave you to your work then,” Ronald said, offering his hand once more.

Frank nodded, shook it, and asked, “Is it locked?”

“No,” Ronald answered. “I trusted the ghost to keep everything safe.”

With a chuckle, Frank walked toward the building and the dead child inside.
